Fight against Doping

 Doping

For more than 25 years Denmark has been one of the leading countries in the world when it comes to the fight against doping in sports.

Anti-Doping Denmark (ADD) was established on December 22nd 2004 as a self-governing institution, responsible for the combat against use of prohibited substances in sports and for enhancing the basic values of elite sport as well as sports for all in Denmark. The structure of the Danish anti-doping system respects Danish laws and the Council of Europe’s anti-doping convention, signed by the Danish Government.

A consequence of the structure is, among other things, that the controlling authority is placed with Anti Doping Denmark, the prosecuting authority with DIF’s Doping Commission and the judicial authority with DIF’s Doping Tribunal.

In collaboration with WADA (the World Anti-Doping Agency) and other international partners, it is also ADD’s responsibility to ensure that international rules and regulations as defined by WADA are followed in Denmark to protect the rights of Danish athletes to participate in a doping-free sport.

Anti Doping Denmark's activities lie within the following areas:
• Doping control
• Information and education
• Research and development relating to the fight against doping
• International collaboration on the fight against doping, and
• Provision of advice and support to public authorities within Anti-Doping Denmark’s area of responsibility.

Based on the above five core responsibilities, ADD has therefore formulated the following vision:

Anti Doping Denmark shall combat the use of doping in Danish sport and promote and develop national and international harmonisation of the anti-doping work, thus establishing Denmark’s position among the pioneering nations within the international anti-doping work.

Cooperation with fitness centres:
Denmark became the first country to succeed in establishing a permanent arrangement on doping control with fitness centres, under which all of the centres' members have a duty to submit to the current doping control rules. The arrangement has grown steadily in 2008, during which the problem with doping among recreational athletes has played a large role in the media and the daily work of Anti Doping Denmark.
