Danish Elite Model

 

Danish top athletes are supported by both their national federation and by the organisation Team Danmark.

Team Danmark which supports the 1,000 best athletes in national teams in 33 sports. Team Danmark also supports around 2,500 young athletes in the educational, where special Team Danmark-high school classes gives them an additional year in High School to create the time and space for each of their sports.

The results
In 2007 Team Danmark supported athletes won 15 medals in the European Championships – and 13 medals in the World Championships. Among the medal winning sports were for example swimming, cycling, rowing, handball and canoe and cayak. 

Gold medals won in the last three Olympic Games:
- 2000: Soling (Mix) and Women’s handball
- 2004: Coxless 4 (LW) and  Women’s handball
- 2008: Coxless 4 (LW) and 49er

The “Act on Danish Elitesport”
The act was established in 1985 – and revised in 2004. The act includes the 12 main targets for the work of Team Danmark.

Team Danmark must secure:
- a cultural and political sound development of elite sports
- recruiting of talents and development of these
- individual financial support for athletes

The Board that consists of 8 members. The Board is the highest authority in Team Danmark:
The Minister for Culture points out 4 members including the Chairman. The last 4 members are elected by the National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark.

The Economy
The financing of Team Danmark is an interaction between the State, the sport and business and trade.
Yearly budget appr. 18,763,990 Euro
The main groups in the budget are:
- financial support to chosen sport federations – 88%
- Sport Event Danmark and Anti Doping Danmark – 4 %
- Administration and communication – 8 %

The facilities
Team Danmark has 3 main training centres – situated around the 2 largest cities – Copenhagen and Aarhus.
The different sports have the daily training in the centres.

The centres include possibilities for housing and food – and they are situated relatively close to major educational centres.

Apart from the Team Danmark centres – Team Danmark also cooperatse with 15 “Elite-municipalities” – that have specific goals on improving the conditions for the local sporting elite. The ultimate goal is that the cooperation is extended to 20 “Elite-municipalities” in 2010.
